UCLA: The First Century
“The last comprehensive history of UCLA was written more than 40 years ago, when the campus was just at the beginning of its journey to becoming a great university. As we approach UCLA’s centennial, we invite all Bruins — and the extended UCLA family — to learn about the UCLA story. We hope this book will rekindle old memories and inspire new discussions of UCLA’s legacy.”
— UCLA History Project
Encapsulating the work of the UCLA History Project, UCLA: The First Century is a 360-page, full-color history combining a lively narrative style and dynamic Bruin tales with lavish illustration and some never-before published photographs.
It will offer a chronological account of UCLA’s journey from its origins to the present day, as well as a thematic approach in detailing UCLA’s campus development, its remarkable sporting prowess and its unique Bruin traditions.

The UCLA Story
Since the UCLA History Project was launched in 2004, we have been chronicling a full account of our beloved alma mater, from its humble beginnings to its current standing as one of the world’s most prestigious public research universities.
We have delved into the untold number of historical documents and photographs preserved in UCLA’s archives and beyond, interviewed numerous members of the UCLA community, and searched for materials and anecdotes that were on the verge of becoming permanently lost or forgotten.
I wanted to create an authentic, historical account of our university. Every day I am inspired by the story of UCLA and I see its history as a collective, living legacy that we all share.
